Why USDA Certified Organic?

“To [Organicare’s] credit, it is an achievement.  It’s not easy to get the certification for personal care products because those standards were developed for foods, so it’s definitely the cleanest of the clean.”

Craig Minowa
Environmental Scientist, Organic Consumer Association

The Organic Consumers Association (OCA) recently published the following, “USDA organic is still the gold standard for body care products, and OCA anticipates a major expansion of new USDA Organic personal care products in 2008.  As a reminder to conscientious consumers, if you don’t see the green ‘USDA Organic’ seal on a personal care product, it may not be as ‘organic’ as it claims to be.  If the product holds the USDA seal, it has met the stringent organic standards established for food.”

In the organic skincare world, words like ‘natural,’ organic,’ ‘certified organic,’ or ‘made with certified organic ingredients’ are used on most every package.  So what does it all mean?

USDA certified Organic
Products bearing this label are made with 100% organic ingredients and may display the USDA Organic seal.

Made with certified organic ingredients
Packaging that reads “Made With Organic Ingredients” must contain 70-94% organic ingredients.  These products will not bear the USDA Organic seal.

Organic
Products with less than 70% organic ingredients may only list organic ingredients on the information panel of the packaging.  These products will not bear the USDA Organic seal.

Natural
Ingredients were produced or existed in nature but are not organically grown without herbicides or pesticides.  These products will not bear the USDA seal.

“At the prestige level it is certainly the first time we have seen a comprehensive, USDA-approved skincare line that is not just a few products or a few select organic ingredients.”
